The Powell River Literacy Council promotes awareness of the importance of literacy for all citizens, regardless of age. In particular we try to raise awareness about the fact that literacy touches everything we do in our every day lives.
Formed in 2004, the Council serves as a regional hub of communication and collaboration among organizations and individuals with an interest in enhancing literacy access and development for Powell River and its surrounding communities. Members include a broad cross-section of community partners representing health, education, government, public library, business community, early childhood development, adult learners, First Nations, and community members at large.
The Council applied for Literacy Now funding to develop a Community Literacy Plan and agreed to act as the Literacy Now Task Group. Powell River Employment Program (PREP) Society was appointed as the steward for the Literacy Now funding, and they continue to play that role today.
